Hit & Run/Collision Reconstruction Unit

Traffic Section Probing serious and fatal collisions

Collision reconstructionists and hit and run investigators are assigned to this specialized unit of the Traffic Section.

A collision reconstructionist is a specially trained police officer responsible for investigating the circumstances of all collisions that result in serious injuries or death. Also members of Traffic Response teams, the Service's seven reconstruction officers complete several additional courses enabling them to collect and evaluate evidence from a collision scene.

Using photography, measurements of skid patterns and other information, they are able to determine a variety of collision factors, including speed of travel, direction of travel and force of impact, to determine the cause of the incident and if any charges are warranted.

They are also responsible for creating evidence packages for court and for providing expert testimony when required.

Hit and runs targeted

The specially trained officers of this unit are responsible for investigating all serious and fatal hit and run incidents.

Regular patrol officers investigate incidents that are less serious and then forward the cases to the hit and run investigators for follow-up.

A hit and run is any collision between a motor vehicle and a person, object or another vehicle after which the driver leaves the scene. Depending on the circumstances and the nature of the incident, charges can be laid under the Criminal Code or provincial statues.

In addition to providing advice to other Service personnel and to the victims of hit and run incidents, Hit and Run Unit investigators maintain regular contact with auto body shops and auto wreckers.
  • Auto body shops are prohibited from making collision-related repairs of more than $1,000 to any vehicle that does not have a damage sticker. The sticker indicates that the collision has been reported to police.
  • Auto wreckers are prohibited from destroying a vehicle damaged in a collision without a police-issued damage sticker. These businesses are required to contact police before doing any work on the vehicle if there is no sticker.
Reconstruction Command Centre

The Calgary Police Service's Reconstruction Command Centre enables more efficient deployment of reconstruction experts and the equipment they need at the scene of serious injury or fatal collisions.
