HAWC1 & Air Services Unit
On July 16, 1995, HAWC1, the first Canadian municipal police helicopter, lifted off for its first official patrol as the Calgary Police Service's 'eye in the sky.' Since then, the helicopter has become a symbol of safety and security to Calgarians.
HAWC1 continues to be a valuable asset to the community and one of the Service's most efficient crime-prevention and crime-fighting tools. HAWC1 can dart to most crime scenes in less than 90 seconds. Its mere presence can prevent or stop a crime in progress, and by using the 'Nightsun,' flight officers can quickly spot suspects even in the cover of night.
