Child at Risk Response Team (CARRT)

Committed to ensuring a healthy, safe and nurturing community for children

The Child at Risk Response Team is a joint initiative of the Calgary Police Service and Region Three - Calgary & Area Child and Family Services. CARRT is made up of two-person teams, consisting of a police officer and a social worker. Each team investigates situations that pose immediate safety concerns involving children at risk.

A child at risk is any person under the age of 18 in need of protection because of physical or sexual abuse, abandonment or neglect, parent/teen conflict, and chronic family/child abuse. The goal of Child at Risk Response Teams is to work together to help families end the cycle of abuse and neglect. Offenders learn that child abuse and neglect are not private family matters, and that legal sanctions will be pursued and enforced in applicable cases.

CARRT enhances the protective services offered by the Calgary Police Service

  • CARRT may be dispatched as a first responder when there is a situation where a child may be at risk.
  • CARRT can help police officers who attend a situation by assessing the situation, offering recommendations, making referrals or acting on the immediate risk to a child.
  • CARRT is available as a resource for the Calgary Police Service to provide consultation on a possible child-at-risk issue.

CARRT Objectives

  • Provide an effective first response to complaints of children at risk.
  • Ensure early identification of children at risk.
  • Provide follow-up services to children at risk and the adult offenders by way of referrals to appropriate community agencies.

You should know . . .

  • Every person has the responsibility to report child abuse or child neglect.
  • The community has the right and responsibility to get involved to help prevent and stop child abuse.
  • The identity of any reporting person is kept confidential and a report can be made anonymously.
  • Effective intervention to stop child abuse requires a consistent, integrated community approach.

CARRT members are available . . .

Monday to Friday 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Saturday & Sunday 2:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
