Senior Safety Tips
"building bridges of understanding..."
One in ten Calgarians is currently over age 65, and this number is expected to double before 2020. The number of people over age 85 is growing faster than any other age group in our society. Since seniors are often targeted by criminals, developing crime prevention programs to enhance their safety and security has become a top priority.
New challenges will arise as the number of seniors in Calgary grows. The seniors liaison officer works on behalf of seniors through a variety of objectives, including:
- Mobilizing communities to resolve crime and safety concerns
- Acting as a resource to police and the community to enhance two-way communication
- Initiating crime prevention programs for seniors
- Promoting education and awareness
Involvement
The seniors liaison officer works to promote education and awareness of seniors' issues, especially in the area of personal safety, elder abuse, and fraud. The liaison officer acts as a resource to seniors groups, committees, boards, and other police and government agencies, has undertaken a variety of initiatives, and is involved in the following community groups:
- Chair, Interdisciplinary Community Consultation Team
- Chair, Seniors Police Advisory Committee
- Chair/Program Coordinator, Wise Owls Fraud Prevention Program
- Member, ABC's of Fraud Advisory Committee
- Member, Older Adult Injury Prevention Work Group
- Member, Elder Abuse Subcommittee
- Member, Abuse Prevention Action Group Subcommittee
- Member, Seniors Outreach Workers Committee
