Prevent Ski and Snowboard Theft
Hey! That snowboard looks just like mine...
Skis and snowboards are popular targets for thieves, especially at busy hills where people continually drop off and pick up their equipment. Your skis and snowboards become even easier targets when they are left unattended or unlocked while you're warming up in the lodge.
The Calgary Police Service and Canada Olympic Park offer the following tips to help prevent the theft of your skis and snowboards:
DID YOU KNOW?
Canada Olympic Park provides free equipment engraving throughout the ski season on the first floor of the Day Lodge.
Monday to Friday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Mark it
- Make sure your equipment is clearly identified with your driver's licence number, initials or another mark to help police identify you as the owner.
Don't leave it
- Never leave your equipment unattended or out of view. A few seconds is all it takes for it to be stolen.
- Use the buddy system and ask a friend to watch your skis or snowboard while you're gone.
If you lose it
- If your equipment is lost or stolen, report it to hill security and to the Calgary Police Service at 266-1234 as soon as possible. The sooner you report it, the better the chances of finding your equipment.
- Make sure you tell the police about any identifying marks on your skis or snowboard. If your equipment is found, these marks will help police identify you as the owner
Record it
- Record the make, model and serial number of all of your equipment. You will need this information to report to the police if your equipment is missing or stolen.
Lock it
- Lock up your equipment whenever possible. Many locations, including Canada Olympic Park, offer lockable racks at the base of the hill.
- Secure your valuables in the lockers or check-in services provided.
- Bring only what you need to the hill. Leave other items at home or locked and out of view in your vehicle.
Canada Olympic Park is providing free equipment engraving throughout the ski season on weekdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and weekends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Day Lodge.
Calgary Police Service theft prevention initiatives
The Calgary Police Service has partnered with Canada Olympic Park and the Canada West Ski Areas Association to develop new ideas about theft prevention and promote these ideas to the ski industry.
The Calgary Police Service participates in the province-wide Ski Check anti-theft program sponsored by Alberta's Solicitor General. This crime prevention program offers tips to prevent theft of ski and snowboard equipment.
Report stolen or missing equipment
Report all ski equipment thefts to the police at 266-1234 regardless of insurance coverage. The Calgary Police Service Stolen Property Unit focuses on recovering property, arresting the original offenders and prosecuting those who buy or sell stolen property. Reporting your loss gives police information and a better chance to find the thieves and charge them, and to recover your property.
A central registry of missing or stolen ski and snowboard equipment is compiled each week from police and ski hill reports. This list of equipment, including make, model and serial number, is sent to all Calgary pawnshops and second-hand consignment stores. Employees confirm the equipment has not been reported missing before purchasing or consigning it.
Partnerships with area ski hills
Officers work with all interested ski hills to teach Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) techniques. Together they find ways for ski hill operators to provide a safe and secure facility based on landscaping and architectural design.
Mark your ski and snowboard equipment with your driver's licence number, initials or another mark to help police identify the owner.
The Calgary Police Service encourages ski hill operators to record the serial numbers of the equipment belonging to their season pass holders. If equipment goes missing, the ski hill will have the information in a database to give to the owner or police.
Ski hills will soon begin posting descriptions of recently stolen skis or snowboards with known serial numbers. It is hoped this will increase awareness of stolen equipment and discourage would-be thieves and their customers.
