Crime Prevention

Bicycle Theft Prevention Initiative

Theft Happens - Help Us Help You!

Mark It

Engrave a driver's license number onto your bike to help police identify you as the owner.

Record It

Describe your ride on the printable form and store it in a safe place. You will need to report this information to the police if your bike is stolen.

Report It

If your bike is stolen, report it to the Calgary Police Service at 266-1234 as soon as possible. Reporting theft gives police a better chance of recovering your ride and arresting the thieves.

Lock It

Crime Prevention
  • Always lock up your bike, regardless of where it is stored - even in a shed or garage. When you don't lock it, you are just making a thief's job easier.
  • Use a cable and a U-lock through the frame and wheels, or even use two U-locks to "harden the target" - make it more difficult and time consuming to steal.
  • Always lock up your bike in a visible, high traffic area.
  • Lock your bike to an immovable object, such as a bike rack that is anchored to the ground. Beware of locking to items that can be easily cut, broken, or removed.
  • Contact your local bike shop for advice on the best type of lock for your ride.

Maintain It

Crime Prevention Keeping your ride in top condition will prevent expensive repairs and potential dangers when cycling. Regular preventative maintenance means:
  • Checking brakes for excessive wear
  • Lubricating the chain and all other moving parts
  • Tightening all nuts and bolts
  • Inspecting tires for correct pressure and signs of wear
  • Installing a bell, light, and reflectors. Test them regularly.
  • A professional yearly inspection is reccommended

Know Your Rules!

  • Riders 16 years and under must wear a CSA approved helmet (Canadian Standards Association).
  • Know the signals for riding on the road (stop, turn right, turn left).
  • Ride on the right-hand side of the road or pathway.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and side with courtesy. "Share the road, share the rules."
  • Provincial law requires a horn or bell on all bicycles.
  • Provincial law requires at least one but not more than two headlamps, at least one red tail lamp and at least one red rear reflector when riding at night.
2,150 bikes were reported stolen in Calgary in 2003. The Calgary Police Service recovered 1,375 bikes and was only able to return 145 to their owners. Record details about your ride on this form and keep it in a safe place. Help us help you by reporting to police if your bike is stolen.
