Youth Education & Intervention Program
The Calgary Police Service believes early intervention is the key to keeping kids on the right track in life. Children identified as being at risk of criminal behaviour early and who get the help they need have a good chance of avoiding a criminal lifestyle. Focusing resources on addressing the root causes of youth crime and violence will make a significant difference in the long run.
One of the Calgary Police Service units responsible for this effort is the Youth Education and Intervention program created in 1997. The officers assigned to this program - one sergeant and eight full-time constables - provide classroom presentations and respond to calls for service at the junior high schools in Calgary.
The unit is also home to the two full-time officers who lead the Calgary Police Service's Youth Involvement Program, a mentoring program for youth between 12 and 14 who've been identified as being at risk for becoming involved in criminal activity.
