Alarm/INET Data Control Unit

The Alarm/INET Data Control Unit plays a vital role in cutting down the number of false alarms police respond to and in providing officers with an investigative tool for intelligence gathering. Seven civilian employees make up this two-part unit.

Alarm Unit

The Alarm area enforces the Alarm Services Bylaw of June 1999, which put into effect a $75 charge for each false security alarm police respond to at businesses and residences. The unit prepares the penalty notices and sends them out by registered mail to security alarm monitoring stations across the city. In 2000, the Calgary Police Service received 12,455 false alarms. The unit also assigns alarm permit numbers for businesses and residences.

INET (Intelligence Network) Unit

INET compiles information gathered by officers who question potentially suspicious individuals on the street.
