The Calgary Police Service is comprised of 109 specialty units, any of which an officer may apply to work in during the course of his or her career. Some of the more high profile units are:

Mountain Bike Unit

The Mountain Bike Unit was formed in 1990 and is comprised of eight constables and one sergeant. The unit rides twelve months a year in the downtown core and from May to October citywide. Officers typically ride 40 km. during their shifts, but can ride as much as 80 km. when circumstances demand. Highly trained and in excellent physical condition, Mountain Bike officers plays a vital role in patrolling areas of the city, such as parks and pathways, not easily accessible by car.

Drug Unit

The Drug Unit consists of 25 officers, one analyst and a staff sergeant. Drug Unit officers work in conjunction with many other areas of the Service to address the illegal drug trade in Calgary. Their work includes dismantling indoor marijuana grow operations, working undercover to target dealers in open-air markets and crack houses, destroying large scale drug distribution networks often connected to organized crime, providing expert testimony in court, and educating youth on the dangers of illegal drugs.

School Resource Unit

The School Resource Unit is comprised of 15 constables and one sergeant who work at 26 Calgary high schools. These officers assist teens with problems they may face on a day-to-day basis, such as peer pressure, drugs, bullying, and youth gangs. In most cases, the school resources officer can resolve a potentially damaging situation before it becomes a serious problem.

Cultural Resources Unit

To respond to increasing diversity in the city and promote tolerance and social cohesion, the Calgary Police Service added a unit dedicated to diversity in 1979. Today, the Cultural Resources Unit works to foster awareness and understanding between police and Calgary's diverse cultural groups, and to promote cross-cultural relationships and partnerships through established advisory committees and active liaison with a variety of communities.

HAWC1 and the Air Services Unit

On July 16, 1995, HAWC1, the first Canadian municipal police helicopter, lifted off for its inaugural patrol as the Calgary Police Service's 'eye in the sky.' Since then, the helicopter has become a symbol of safety and security to Calgarians, and continues to be one of the Service's most efficient crime-prevention and crime-fighting tools. The helicopter is capable of flying at 300 kph. and can cross the city in just three minutes. It is also equipped with a 30 million-candlepower light, infrared red camera and a global positioning system.

Canine Unit

The Canine Unit is comprised of 13 officers and 16 dogs that respond to approximately 8,000 calls a year. The dogs are used to track suspects, find evidence and detect explosives and narcotics with amazing speed and accuracy. Because of their intelligence and loyal nature, police dogs cause fear in offenders - making the offenders more willing to follow police instructions - and are fierce protectors of their human partners. Many of the dogs also take commands in other languages than English.
