Recruit Physical Fitness Expectations

By successfully passing the applicant physical fitness standard (PARE), recruits have achieved the minimal level of fitness expected of a potential CPS police officer. However, recruit training will be very demanding and will challenge fitness levels. Therefore, it is imperative that applicants continue their training. Every recruit is expected to enter recruit training able to complete the following:
  • Run 5 km in less than 27 minutes;
  • Achieve stage 7 on the Leger 20m Shuttle Run;
  • Reach 30cm on a Trunk Forward Flexion (sit and reach) assessment;
  • Bench press, in a single repetition, 100% of your body weight (males) or 60% of your body weight (females);
  • 25 full push-ups (males) or 10 full push-ups (females);
  • 40 partial curl-ups;
  • 5 pull-ups (palms facing away from body) (males) or 3 pull-ups (females);
Recruits who cannot meet these standards at the beginning of recruit training will find themselves severely disadvantaged during Physical Training and Subject Control Tactics sessions. We start recruit training with the assumption that every recruit meets these standards. Recruits will be tested on their level of physical fitness during the first week of classes, mid way through training and then at the completion of recruit classes.

Clothing Requirements

As running will comprise a major portion of Physical Training, a good running shoe will be essential to prevent injury and allow recruits to maximize their performance.

Recruits can expect to be running outdoors and Calgary weather is notoriously unpredictable. Therefore, we encourage recruits to be prepared to be active out in poor weather conditions (i.e. cold, rain, and snow). For remaining comfortable in such conditions is it also recommended that they purchase clothing consisting of an insulating under layer and outer shell. There are many outdoor activity specialty stores in the Calgary area where quality outdoor apparel is available.

Recruits will be required to have proper gym strip when participating in Physical Training sessions. At minimum this consists of a T-shirt, shorts, athletic shoes, and socks. In the past, many recruit classes have chosen to purchase class T-shirts to be used for Physical Training.
