Once applicants have submitted their application, arrangements will be made to complete all of the required stages during an approximate one-week visit to Calgary.
The Calgary Police Service has been fortunate to be able to participate in the Alberta Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Applicants compete for 25 positions in 2006 as well as projected 2007 positions. Successful applications in excess of the allocated PNP positions will remain on file and carried over to following years. This will greatly reduce processing times for immigration status.
Experienced UK Police Officers with a minimum of two (2) full years of service will be remunerated in accordance with the Calgary Police Service pay scales, commensurate with their experience up to and including 1st class constable rank. All other international Police Officers will be required to submit a detailed background of police training and experience. Evaluation will be done on a case by case analysis.
Calgary officers complete a 6-month paid training program at our Chief Crowfoot Learning Centre. Officers learn and enhance their skills in tactics, law studies, and general policing education. Officers then complete an officer-coach phase for 12 weeks where skills are further developed in the field.
Transportation
No matter how you decide to travel around Calgary, numerous options exist for the daily traveler. Calgary has an extensive municipal bus and train system that will allow you to travel to any of the four corners of the city. An extensive cycling pathway system traverses throughout the city taking you along most of the scenic routes. Most Calgarians travel to and from destinations in their vehicles. Free-flowing traffic is a common goal of Calgarians and the continual road construction improvements are indicative of the City's commitment to that achievement. Vehicle commuting time from the city limits to the downtown core during high volume would take on average 35-40 minutes.
Residential
Numerous beautiful suburban communities surround the vibrant downtown core. Current average house prices in 2006 are CDN $350,000. The majority of Calgarians live in single-family homes; however, numerous other options such as apartments and condos exist for individual preferences. All of Calgary communities have green spaces, parks, and trail systems for recreational opportunities. Individual neighborhoods may take advantage of natural surroundings, while others may focus on local attractions. Many Calgary officers reside outside of city limits in many neighboring satellite communities.
Taxes
A Canadian federal tax rate of 6% GST (Goods and Services Tax) exists for all individuals. (6% effective in July 2006) Calgary residents enjoy no provincial sales tax. Municipal residential tax on an average CDN $350,000 home is approximately CDN $1900.00 / year.
Education
Calgary students have numerous options for education. Most of the students in Calgary attend either public or catholic schools, while many choose to attend private, charter, or francophone schools. Class sizes may range in numbers depending on what option you choose.
Recreation
Numerous opportunities exist for all types of recreational activities. Fitness / aquatic facilities, outdoor pursuits, and facilities for all types of fitness enthusiasts are plentiful. Calgary is a healthy community where you will find activities for young and old. Calgary is home to many professional sports teams for your entertainment.
If you wish to get out of the city, a short 35 min. drive west brings you to the Canadian Rockies and provincial Kananaskis Country. Numerous outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, mountain biking, rafting, and skiing to name a few.
