About Community Crime Stats
Police officers, Communications officers and other Calgary Police Service personnel take information from the public on crimes and submit reports to our Police Information Management System (PIMS). Crime statistics are generated from PIMS. It is important to note:
- City-wide crime statistics for selected offences reported to the Calgary Police Service in the last 12 months are presented below. Not all offences are listed.
- Many factors can affect the number of reported crimes in each community. For example, community differences in population, land use distribution, willingness to report crime, targeted enforcement programs, etc., can contribute to observed differences. As such, communities with higher numbers of offences should not be interpreted as being "less safe" than communities with lower numbers. Rates which are calculated per 1,000 population are generally more helpful in determining the relative seriousness of a problem, however further analysis is still required to fully understand differences in rates.
- The numbers may change over time, mainly because of late reporting by victims. Also, as investigations progress, the initial offence may change, and additional offences may be discovered.
- Crimes that go unreported to police are excluded from official crime statistics.
