Seven Steps For Safe Surfing

The Internet can be awesome! There are lots of cool games, activities and information to help you learn. By following these tips, you'll be in good shape to avoid the dangers of the Internet and enjoy a safe experience as you surf the World Wide Web.

  1. There is no way to know if an online friend is really who they say they are. If an online friend requests you keep them secret, end the chat and tell an adult about it.
  2. Never agree to meet someone you know only through the Internet unless you have your parents' approval. Even with approval, take an adult along and meet in a busy, public place.
  3. Never make purchases or place orders over the Internet without your parents' approval.
  4. Never give out personal information such as your last name, address, telephone number, password, the name and location of your school, or the name and details of your sports team. Also, your parents' credit card numbers, work addresses or telephone numbers are off limits.
  5. Never send your picture or anything else to an online 'friend' without your parents' approval.
  6. Never respond to messages that are mean or make you feel uncomfortable. Tell your parents immediately.
  7. Never use bad language on the Internet or send mean messages.

Has this ever happened to you?

Have you ever been sent an e-mail that seems more like it's for an adult than for you?

Has anyone ever threatened you in an e-mail message?

Has anyone ever sent you an e-mail that made you feel bad or uncomfortable?

If any of these things ever happens to you, tell your parents right away and let them help you deal with it. They can help you determine what e-mail is harmful to you. They can also report it to your Internet provider or the police if it is serious enough. If this happens to you at school, tell your teacher.

Also, if you get an e-mail and you don't recognize the sender it's a good idea to let your parents or teacher look at it before you open it to make sure it's friendly.
