Our Mission: "To optimize public safety in the City of Calgary"
KidZone
SuperKids
The Calgary Police Service has launched a program to recognize the "super" contribution of kids to the quality of life in Calgary.
Uniformed constables throughout the city are recognizing and rewarding young people, aged 6 to 13 years, by giving SuperKids coupons to deserving children. The coupons are given at the discretion of the officers and may be awarded for such things as wearing a bike helmet, crossing the street safely, helping out a neighbour or picking up trash. The coupons, which will be mailed to the young person's home, can be redeemed at any location of the three product sponsors - Dairy Queen, 7-11 or Rogers Video.
Program recognizes kids' contributions
"This is a very exciting program created because we want to acknowledge some of the positive contributions so many young people make every single day," said Constable Eleanor Wagner, the project's creator and coordinator.
The idea for SuperKids was sparked in April 1998 when Constable Wagner and her partner were patrolling in a southeast neighbourhood. They noticed a young boy, about eight or nine years old, sweeping gravel from the street in front of his house. In fact, he had swept the entire block.
The officers pulled over to chat with the lad and one joked that they hoped he was getting extra allowance for all his hard work. He said it wasn't about money, he was simply helping out. As the constables drove away, they wished they had something to give the boy to recognize his positive contribution.
Kids rewarded for helping out
The SuperKids program gives officers a way to say thanks to young people. Our officers often come across young people who show pride in their community or take an extra step to be nice, safe or helpful. This is a great way to recognize and encourage them.
The SuperKids program was first run as a pilot project in Districts 6 and 8 where 700 kids were rewarded within 14 months. After an evaluation of its success, it has been introduced across the city. Since then more than 2000 kids have been recognized.
