Hate - Don’t Buy In!

Don’t Buy In is a diversity and anti-hate/bias education program for Calgary junior and senior high school students. This program provides schools with skill development information and resources needed to support an environment that actively addresses issues of hate, bias and discrimination. The program empowers youth to respond appropriately to hate/bias incidents and crimes. Ultimately, Don’t Buy In aims to encourage youth to respond to hate/bias incidents in Calgary.

The Don’t Buy In program offers presentations to schools and youth groups and an interactive website for teens. Since its implementation in 2004 more than 2000 students have participated in Don’t Buy In presentations. The website, www.dontbuyin.ca has had more than 4000 hits.

Don’t Buy In presentations include the Diversity Challenge Game; an interactive, game show-like activity to foster awareness and understanding about issues including: religion, sexual orientation, race and culture.

www.dontbuyin.ca offers teens information about discrimination, a database of diversity programs in Calgary, a chat forum for teens to discuss diversity issues, including how they have been affected by hate/bias.

The Don’t Buy In program is funded by: the Calgary Foundation; the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund; National Crime Prevention Strategy and the Calgary Police Service.
