Crime Prevention Initiatives

Junior Constable Program

The Calgary Police Service has initiated a program that introduces children to the role of a police officer and addresses two important community issues - vandalism and graffiti.

The Junior Constable Program program is unique to District 4, where it is being piloted at Blessed Kateri Elementary School. Throughout November, children in Grades 1 through 6 will be given a 30-minute presentation by a constable.

Students can ask questions and will take the Junior Constable Oath - "I promise to keep my school and neighbourhood clean. I promise to respect other people's property. I will not damage property and I promise to tell my teacher or an adult if I see others damaging property." At the end of the session, students will receive a Junior Constable badge. More than 400 students will participate.

District 4 Members of the Calgary Police Service are excited about this new opportunity to build relationships with children while enhancing their understanding of the damage caused by graffiti and vandalism and what they can do to stop it.

36 Street Beat

Two constables are assigned to the beat that addresses safety and security concerns along the 36 Street C-Train corridor. The beat includes Sunridge Mall, Marlborough Mall and the hospital, Peter Lougheed Centre.

The initiative was developed with input from the community. Recognizing that large parking lots are often targeted for vehicle thefts and car prowlings and that C-Train platforms can be a place of criminal activity, police and residents designed the project to reduce crime rates.

With the number of crimes reported along the corridor substantially down since the project began, the 36 Street Beat is an excellent example of the effectiveness of community-based policing.

District 4 Break and Enter Detail

The two constables assigned to this special detail investigate all break and enters in District 4, including break-ins to homes, garages, sheds and businesses. Established in recognition that this was a major concern for police and residents in District 4, the team has significantly boosted the number of cases solved.

The detail also allows constables to develop specialized investigation skills and knowledge of the repeat offenders in the area, so they are more efficient and effective in these often difficult investigations.

Crime Free Multi-Housing Program

The Crime Free Multi-Housing Program is designed to reduce illegal activity in residential multi-family sites. The program increases quality of life and residents' sense of security.

District 4 facilitates many of the required sessions and offers follow-up advice for certified properties. For more information, visit the Crime Free Multi-Housing page or contact Constable Peter Waring at (403) 273-1888.

Adopt-A-School

Adopt-A-School is based on a program from other cities called Adopt-A-Cop. The main objective is to provide schools with a resource on crime prevention and access to contacts within the Calgary Police Service. This program targets elementary and junior high schools and promotes positive interaction with police officers.

Building strong, positive relationships between officers and children is a top priority for District 4. For more information about the Adopt-A-School program, please contact Constable Peter Waring at (403) 273-1888.
