District 3
Crime Prevention Initiatives
Break and Enter Detail
House break and entry is a major concern to Calgarians. In Distict 3, two constables work full time investigating house break-ins. These officers work with the General Investigation Unit, district analysts and others in the Service to identify suspects and lay charges. Since the establishment of the detail, the number of cases solved has increased significantly.
Shop Break and Enter Detail
A detective and a constable work full time investigating commercial break and enters in the District. These officers work with the General Investigation Unit Detectives, the District Analyst and other areas within the Service to conclude investigations.
Mountain Bike Team
The Mountain Bike Team consists of officers with the ability and expertise to respond to calls for service year round, special projects and community functions within the District. Their mobility and methods of response make them an excellent crime prevention and apprehension strategy.
Stolen Property Unit
One officer is assigned to the Stolen Property Unit to identify stolen property and match it to victims. The unit communicates with second-hand stores, pawn shops, the Break and Enter Detail and Business Watch International - a national network that monitors transactions at second-hand stores and pawn shops. When suspects are identified, they are forwarded to investigators who follow up with further investigation and criminal charges when applicable.
Business Liaison Program
There are more than 500 businesses in the District 3 area registered in this program which is coordinated by a Community Liaison Officer (CLO), Constable Tanya Bertulli. More than a dozen volunteers assist with a variety of tasks and activities. Businesses benefit from the work of the Business Liaison Program in several ways. Volunteers collect and maintain current information from businesses, and this information is then included in the database. Volunteers and district members discuss issues with the business owners and managers and share possible solutions. Some of the Business Liaison Program initiatives are:
- Personal Safety Presentation
- Identity Theft Prevention Presentation
- Traveling Alone Safety Presentation
- Electronic Crime Alert System
F- acilitate Biz Crime training sessions regarding counterfeit currency
