Crime Prevention Initiatives

Project OWN prevents youth from re-offending

Project OWN works with youth on probation or on release pending trial. The objective is to ensure compliance with the rules established by the court, and ultimately help the youth turn away from future criminal activity.

Youth are assigned to an officer, with the officer making numerous visits with the youth at his/her home, school or work. If the youth is found breaking the rules of his/her release, charges are laid and the courts deal with the offences.

District 2 Park patrols prevent damage and crime

Through a partnership with Calgary Parks and Recreation, Calgary Bylaw Enforcement and Alberta Social Services, Districts 2 and 7 and the Mountain Bike Unit conduct random and ongoing patrols of Edworthy Park and North Glenmore Park.

The purpose of these patrols is multifaceted. The police and our partners identify locations in the parks where property damage, vandalism, camping, or criminal activities have occurred, or could potentially occur. The patrols also address provincial statutes and city bylaws, assist homeless people, and check the condition of pathways and environmentally sensitive areas of the park.

The patrols occur randomly throughout the spring and summer.

Business Liaison Program addresses crime and safety

Businesses in District 2 benefit from the work of the Business Liaison Program. The goal of the program is to establish and maintain regular contact between the business community and the Calgary Police Service to address crime prevention and safety concerns. Volunteers and officers collect information from businesses and maintain a database that includes contact information. They also discuss crime and safety issues with business owners and managers and work together to devise solutions to these problems.

Since the launch of the program, over 2000 businesses in District 2 have signed on and approximately 20 volunteers assist officers with the program.
