About the CPS

Our Mission:
"To optimize public safety
in the City of Calgary"

Working together

Celebrating Partnerships in Community Policing

What is Community Policing?

Working together to optimize public safety.

Community Policing is, quite simply, police officers and Calgarians working together, in partnership, to prevent crime, and finding long-lasting solutions to the problems that threaten safety and order.

Community policing emphasizes...
  • peacekeeping
  • problem-solving
  • crime prevention
  • constructive alternatives to law enforcement for some offences or offenders
  • the participation of the community

What is the Key to Community Policing?

Consulting with our communities.

We work with Calgarians in many ways, and in many places, to learn:
  • community priorities
  • the needs of crime victims
  • the best way to deliver services
  • the effectiveness and quality of our services
  • the requirements of the law enforcement and criminal justice environment
Together, we determine priorities and develop plans to solve problems. We are now providing services along a continuum from education to early intervention to enforcement.

What are Calgarians Saying?

Understanding the needs and expectations of Calgarians is a vital element of successful community policing. To determine the issues most important to Calgarians, the Calgary Police Service conducts community surveys on a regular basis. The Calgary Police Service has numerous innovative programs that address citizens' top crime and safety concerns. The results of the 2000 survey found that Calgarians' most important policing priorities are:
  • house break-ins
  • speeding and other traffic problems
  • gang activity
  • stolen vehicles
  • vandalism
  • illegal drugs
The police service is continuing to consult with Calgarians to ensure police programs reflect community needs and expectations. The 2000 Calgary Police Service community survey showed 96 per cent of Calgarians are satisfied with their policing services.

Together we can help make Calgary the best place to live.

Together, the police and community can continue to optimize safety in our city and help make Calgary the best place to live.
