Our mission is: "To optimize public safety in the city of Calgary." This site includes a wealth of information dedicated to achieving that mission, including comprehensive sections on crime prevention, traffic safety, a special section for kids and teens and much more.
Chief Rick Hanson
 Chief Rick Hanson has over 32 years of policing experience, the last 15 of which have been at the senior management levels within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Calgary Police Service.
Chief Hanson has a B.A. in Social Sciences from and is a graduate of the Executive Development Program through the University of Calgary. He is also a graduate of the FBI Leadership in Counter-terrorism course and the Canadian Police College Executive Development Program.
Chief Hanson served most recently as Chief Superintendent with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police “K” Division. From October 2005 to April 2006 he was Superintendent, RCMP, “K” Division as the officer in Charge of the Calgary Urban Area.
Prior to serving with the RCMP, Chief Hanson served with the Calgary Police Service in the capacity of Deputy Chief, Bureau of Support Services, Deputy Chief, Bureau of Community Police and Deputy Chief, Bureau of Research, Development and Learning.
Chief Hanson also served in the roles of Superintendent, Executive Officer to the Chief of Police and Superintendent, Centralized Operations Division.
Chief Hanson joined the Calgary Police Service as a constable in 1975. During his distinguished, 32-year policing career, Chief Hanson received the following Honours and Awards:
- Member, Order of Merit of the Police Forces, Canada
- RCMP Assistant Commissioner’s Commendation (G8)
- Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, Canada
- Chief’s Award of Excellence, Calgary Police Service
- Police Long Service Medal, Alberta
- Police Exemplary Service Medal, Canada
He is also affiliated with the following organizations:
