             CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE

    Five occupants of a home in the 100 block of Douglas
Woods View S.E awoke to the sound of a smoke detector shortly
before 05:30 this morning. All 5 people escaped to safety,
three of which jumped from the second story balcony. 

  Fire crews arrived to a street blanketed in smoke and
quickly began an aggressive attack on the fire but were later
forced to go defensive. Crews were successful in protecting
exposures on either side of the fire with only minor siding
damage resulting to the home on the west. 

   The shell of the home is all that remains and no cause or
dollar loss has been determined. The Calgary Police Arson
Unit was requested to attend and have deemed the fire
suspicious in nature. The circumstances surrounding the Arson
Units decision will not be disclosed at this time.

   The incident was upgraded to a second alarm fire resulting
in approximately 12 pieces of apparatus and 30 firefighters.
