The Smoke Detector Program is designed to educate Calgarians about the importance of having working smoke detectors in their homes. Over the past 11 years, the Fire Department has visited over 175 000 homes in Calgary to ensure each home has functioning smoke detectors and they are located where required. Fire fighters have also installed or replaced over 19,600 smoke detectors and replaced 12,700 batteries. Since the inception of the program, smoke detectors have saved 30 lives. These people are living testaments to the value of having a working smoke detector. To help celebrate The Smoke Detector Program and kick off the 2008 campaign, the Fire Department and the CRHBA will hold a celebration that will include cake, refreshments, and fire trucks. Speakers will include Fire Chief Bruce Burrell, representatives from our corporate sponsors, and the program’s committee chair. The event will also include a family whose lives were saved recently by their smoke detector. The celebration and launch will be held: - Monday May 12 2008 - 10:00 hours - #16 Fire Headquarters 4124 11 Street.
