Date: Wed May 30 08:26:43 2007 Subject: PA/MRU #07-224 CROSS-BORDER SKIMMING LAB From: Emma Poole -----BEGIN MD5 ----------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------- CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE ----------------------------------------------------------------- In January 2006, investigators with the U.S. Secret Service specializing in payment card fraud and Internet crime, identified a person using the Internet name of “Dron,” who was advertising skimming equipment for sale over the Internet. A possible Calgary connection was identified and investigators assigned to the Calgary Police Service Commercial Crime Unit were involved in the investigation. A joint, cross-border investigation was initiated. A Calgary resident was identified as the alleged manufacturer and exporter of devices which could be used for skimming data from debit and credit cards. With the assistance of other CPS units, the Calgary case has been successfully concluded. On Friday, May 25, 2007, members of the Commercial Crime Unit and District 1, with the assistance of U.S. Secret Service investigators, executed a search warrant on an apartment suite located in the 900 block of 7 Avenue S.W. Numerous items were seized, including approximately 100 skimming devices and $30,000 in cash. Investigators discovered a workshop in the suite where these skimming devices were being manufactured to be sold over the Internet and potentially distributed to buyers worldwide. While the investigation into this matter continues, the CPS has arrested and charged the resident of the suite. Nicholas Wayne JOEHLE, 26, is charged with two counts of export device for forging or falsifying credit cards, one count of possession of a device for forging or falsifying credit cards and one count of possession of proceeds of crime. This arrest and seizure is considered significant by the commercial crime investigators, as it has targeted a person believed to be responsible for manufacturing and distribution of equipment designed to compromise ATM machines worldwide. Media can attend the CPS commercial crime offices at 5720 Silver Springs Blvd. N.W. between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2007, where the seized skimming devices will be available for viewing. Calgary police Det. Spencer Frizzell will be available for media interviews at that time. RELEASED BY THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS/MEDIA RELATIONS UNIT FOR DET.COLIN HARPER AND DET.
